Teens In Two Homes
You feel like you just can’t reach your teen anymore, and you don’t know what to do.
You’re exhausted, burned out, lonely, and feeling hopeless. Connecting with them used to be so easy. Now, you feel like you’re walking on eggshells in your own home. You’ve done your best to be reasonable, set limits, give consequences and none of it seems to be working. Your child’s other parent isn’t much help either. Even though your teen has more than two parents, it seems like no one’s really in charge. And the rules are so different in their other home.
It feels like your life is constantly in turmoil as your teen moves back and forth between homes, rules, and worlds.
You miss being together and having fun. They’re so busy now living in two places, working, and participating in extracurriculars. You feel like you’re running out of time, because your teen is preparing to leave the nest. They’re making the same mistakes over and over and you don’t get why they can’t learn. You’re scared about what’s going to happen to them if this continues and you feel so alone. Even though you’re remarried, your partner isn’t much help, because they’re not your child’s biological parent. They leave all the discipline up to you, and you really just want some help. Even though you got divorced years ago, you silently wonder, “is this all going on because I’m not with their parent anymore?”
You don’t want to live like this anymore.
Hi, I’m Kristen, and I help co-parenting and two household homes who feel exhausted and confused learn how to navigate their child’s teen years without anger and resentment. I help teens living in two homes explore what’s going on underneath behaviors like failing grades, vaping, or sexting, so that they can deal with their stress in healthy ways. I am trained in how to grow resilience in families AKA the ability to bounce back through hard things like co-parenting, life in two homes, changing family structures like divorce and remarriage, and being a teenager in the 21st century. My teen clients typically come to see me weekly, so they can develop a relationship with me and practice open communication without a screen.
Through the process of counseling, I will have sessions with the parents and guardians who are in the teens life as well to help support you, as your teen learns to identify emotions, practice healthy coping skills, and learn confidence in communicating effectively. I will often integrate breath work and easy yoga moves to help teach how the brain and body are connected and to provide tools from day one, which can help you outside the therapy room.
Therapy is awkward, I’m not gonna lie. It’s also a relief…
It’s a relief to be able to take some time in stillness, practice new ways of being, and laugh along the way, so you can stay connected with your teen, and they can grow into happy, healthy young adults.
