What kind of services/offerings do you provide?
Katherine and her team specialize in services for, you guessed it, Anxiety and OCD by providing therapy in Georgetown, TX. They offer individual therapy as well as parent support sessions. They also have groups, but currently do not have any groups running.
Within that umbrella, they also have the specializations of Tourette’s, postpartum anxiety, and OCD-postpartum anxiety, which Nelsen says is more prevalent now than postpartum depression. Since Central Texas Anxiety and OCD Center currently has five clinicians which varied training and expertise, they’re also able to offer services for all anxiety disorders including- generalized anxiety, phobias, social anxiety, OCD and also Tourette's and Trichotillomania. The practice serves kids, teens, and adults.
How do your services/offerings help teens and parents of teens who have anxiety or OCD?
Katherine’s goal is to support teens and their parents until they don’t need help anymore. The practice uses evidence-based methods such as EMDR to solve the root of the issue, so they symptoms no longer interfere with day to day life.
She says, “We provide the gold standard of treatment for teens with anxiety and OCD and develop individualized goals. It is the most proven treatment for anxiety and OCD and is more skills based than other forms of treatment. We teach the teens (and their parents) how to manage their anxiety, stop avoiding the things that are making them anxious and take back control of their life!”
For any child seen by the practice, Central Texas Anxiety and OCD Center also offers OCD parent sessions. Typically parents come for 1-3 sessions, depending on their teen’s level of need. Katherine says, “parenting a kid with OCD is often counterintuitive to typical parenting strategies.” The aim is to support parents in shifting some of their own behaviors in order to respond more effectively to what’s going on with their teen. Most services are currently through individual therapy in Georgetown, TX. In the future, She hopes to add a virtual group therapy option based out of Georgetown, TX, to support women experiencing postpartum OCD and anxiety.
What kind of teens and parent of teens with anxiety and OCD do you love working with?
Katherine says, “I see all ages from little kids through young adults. I also work with parents of kids/teens who have anxiety and OCD. I love working with teens that are anxious about going to college or deciding what to do after High School. It's such a big transition and life decision and I love supporting them through that!
I also love supporting parents and teaching them how to support their teen without accommodating their anxiety.”
During a teen or their parent’s first session with you, what can they expect to experience?
In the initial session, “get to know you session”, Katherine wants to know all about current symptoms, but also things you enjoy doing, any hobbies you have and goals. This session is also a time to build connection and develop rapport, because “I feel that is the most important factor in determining if therapy is going to be beneficial. I want the teen to trust me and open up about how they are feeling.”
What do you wish people knew about your business?
“That I love my job and love helping people! I love being able to be creative with therapy, especially with developing exposures or challenges for teens to work on. Therapy is tough work, but it doesn't have to be boring!”
What was your favorite thing about being a teenager?
“I was very involved in dance and loved being a part of our high school dance team!"
